60 MinsDrop in anytime between 11am–2pm for a hands-on, imaginative workshop led by award-winning artist Katy B Plummer, designed for children aged 6–12. Katy is a video artist who makes playful films, using costumes, characters, and storytelling to bring big ideas to life. She has a background in public programming and has run workshops for all levels of accessibility.
Children will make costumes out of kraft paper and tape, engaging with themes from the video installation to spark curiosity and encourage collaboration.
No prior experience needed — just bring your imagination!
Inspired by Margaret and the Grey Mare, this one-hour session invites young participants to explore creative expression in a playful and supportive environment. Margaret & The Grey Mare is a magical story told through music and film, where a girl named Margaret meets a mysterious horse from an old folktale.
Parents and carers must attend alongside their child for the full workshop, but at no additional cost.
If cost is a barrier and you would like to attend, please get in touch at info@thesubstation.org.au.
Due to popular demand and to allow even more opportunities for creative play, the workshop has been extended (drop-in anytime between 11am–2pm), and there will be two activities available during the session:
- Costume making with artist Katy B Plummer in the dance studio
- Sculptural play in our downstairs galleries, inspired by A Residual Pulse, the light exhibition by artist Meagan Streader
This is a playful, flexible environment designed for young children and their families to explore, imagine, create, and play at their own pace!
MAKE A DAY OF IT AT THE SUBSTATION
After the workshop, participants and their families are encouraged to stay and experience the full Margaret and the Grey Mare video installation, explore A Residual Pulse, a new family-friendly exhibition by light artist Meagan Streader, and step outside to view textile artist Nicole Chui's Grassroots Never Dies, Worldwide outdoor billboard gallery.
Come along, get creative and enjoy a full day of art, light and storytelling for all ages.
